The Ukrainian delegation once again strongly condemned the russian federation’s systematic encroachments on Ukrainian intellectual property assets.
In Geneva, Switzerland, during the 66th series of meetings of the Assemblies of the Member States of World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the report of the WIPO Advisory Committee on Enforcement (ACE) was presented.
As part of the discussions, the Ukrainian delegation, comprising representatives of the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine and the Ukrainian National Office for Intellectual Property and Innovations (UANIPIO/IP Office), expressed gratitude to the WIPO Secretariat for its consistent efforts aimed at strengthening the mechanisms to combat counterfeiting and piracy.
On behalf of Ukraine, the statement was delivered by Vladyslav Bilotskyi, Deputy Director of UANIPIO, who emphasized the importance of further developing the WIPO Customs Recordation and Information System (WIPO CRIS), which has garnered significant interest from the State Customs Service of Ukraine.
The Ukrainian delegation reiterated that Ukraine continues to face systemic violations of IP rights perpetrated by the russian federation amid its ongoing armed aggression.
“The unlawful appropriation of Ukrainian trademarks and geographical indications, such as “Melitopol Cherry”, remains a stark reminder of how IP can be misused as a tool of aggression”, emphasized Vladyslav Bilotskyi.
In response, Ukraine has intensified its efforts to reinforce the protection of IP rights and promote compliance across all sectors. In particular, the Ukrainian delegation presented several successful initiatives:
The Ukrainian delegation also underscored an important step in the area of alternative dispute resolution: the establishment of the IP Office’s Mediation Center. An indicative example was a 2024 case successfully resolved through mediation between a major agribusiness and a creative agency, which also catalyzed improvements in procurement practices within the marketing sector.
“Ukraine reaffirms its strong commitment to WIPO’s work on enforcement and alternative dispute resolution. We will continue to engage constructively and share our national experience to help ensure that the IP system remains robust, respected, and protected from abuse”, the Ukrainian delegation stated.
