    Ukraine elected to the governing bodies of the World Intellectual Property Organization for the next two years

    During the 66th series of meetings of the Assemblies of the Member States of World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Ukraine was elected to three key governing bodies of WIPO for the biennial period (July 2025–July 2027):

    • WIPO Coordination Committee;

    • Paris Union Executive Committee;

    • WIPO Programme and Budget Committee.

    The Coordination Committee and the WIPO Programme and Budget Committee include Ukraine, whose delegation at the General Assembly was represented by the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine, the Ukrainian National Office for Intellectual Property and Innovations (UANIPIO/IP Office) and the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva, was elected for the first time.

    “Participation in WIPO governing bodies is not just about representation. It is an opportunity to influence decisions that shape global rules. We are joining with a clear agenda – digitalization, protection against abuse, and support for creative industries. And we will strive for decisions that work for both Ukraine and the world,” said Oleksandr Tsybort, Deputy Minister of Economy of Ukraine for Digital Development, Digital Transformation, and Digitalization.

    “Ukraine’s election to three WIPO governing bodies at once was the result of the dedicated work of a diplomatic and expert teams, as well as confirmation that Ukraine’s role in the global intellectual property system is growing,” said Olena Orliuk, Director of UANIPIO.

    The WIPO Coordination Committee, which advises the Unions, the General Assembly, the WIPO Conference, and the Director General on all administrative, financial, and other matters, plays a key role in the process of electing the Director General of the organization. In particular, it nominates candidates for the position of Director General, prepares the agenda of the General Assembly, and provides recommendations on the budget for expenses common to the Unions of all international agreements administered by WIPO.

    The election process for the new WIPO Director General will start in July this year. Membership in this body will allow Ukraine to participate directly in strategic decision-making.

    At the same time, the WIPO Program and Budget Committee, to which Ukraine has also been elected for the first time, is the main platform for discussing issues related to the financing of the organization and the implementation of its programs. The recommendations of this Committee are decisive for the adoption of the budget by the entire General Assembly.

    The Executive Committee of the Paris Union plays a key role in ensuring the effective management of the Union’s activities in the field of industrial property protection. In particular, it prepares the agenda of the Union Assembly, formulates proposals for its program and budget prepared by the Director General, approves annual programs and budgets within the framework of the Union’s approved three-year program, reviews reports, and performs other functions provided for by the Paris Convention.

    “Ukraine’s membership in this body will allow our country to be directly involved in strategic and budget planning processes within one of the most important unions in the field of industrial property protection,” commented Bogdan Paduchak, First Deputy Director of UANIPIO.

    Ukraine’s participation in the work of WIPO’s governing bodies demonstrates our country’s efforts to develop the global IP system, strengthen the protection of national interests, and effectively promote key priorities within the framework of the Organization and relevant Unions.
