Please find below an analytical report of the IP Office with indicators of activity in the field of IP for the first three months of the year.
Despite Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, there have been successes in the field of intellectual property: the number of applications for industrial property rights (IPR) in the first quarter increased by almost 30% compared to the same period in 2023. At the same time, the number of trademark applications filed (6,524) exceeded not only last year’s figure, but also the 2020 figure.
In general, comparing the same periods in 2023 and 2024, it can be stated that the filing rates for utility models (39.9%) and trademarks (33.9%) have increased significantly, but the number of applications for industrial designs remained almost unchanged, and the number of inventions slightly decreased (7.9%).
Application filings in 2024 compared to the first quarter of 2023:
The total number of registrations in the first quarter of 2024 increased by 7.8% compared to the first quarter of 2023 and amounted to 4,827:
The total number of applications for inventions decreased by 7.9% (618) compared to the same period in 2023, due to a decrease in the number of filings by 18.3% (357) under the PCT procedure.
Under the national procedure, the number of applications received from national and foreign applicants is the highest since 2022, amounting to 206 (up 9%) and 55 (up 22.2%) respectively.
In the first quarter of 2024, applicants from the USA, Germany, the UK, and Switzerland filed the largest number of applications. In addition, a particularly significant increase was observed from applicants from China, where the number of applications increased by 54.5%.
During the reporting period, there was a noticeable increase in the filings and registrations of utility models, which indicates an increase in innovation activity in various industries. The total number of applications in the first quarter of 2024 increased significantly compared to the previous year, reaching 964, which is 39.9% more than last year. Almost all applications were filed under the national procedure, with the number of applications from domestic applicants increasing by 40.5% and from foreign applicants by 25.0%.
The first quarter of 2024 demonstrates the economic recovery and increased interest in brand protection in Ukraine among both domestic and foreign applicants. The dynamics of trademark filings fluctuates slightly in the first quarters, but after a significant decline in 2022, the filings rate is gradually increasing.
In the first quarter of 2024, the number of filed applications reached 6,524, which is 33.9% more than in the corresponding quarter of 2023 (4,872 applications). The increase in activity is mainly due to an increase in the number of applications from national applicants, from 4364 in 2023 to 5766 in 2024. Foreign applicants demonstrate stable, albeit less active, filing dynamics, which indicates interest in the Ukrainian market, but with some caution: the number of applications from foreign applicants increased by 49.2%, from 508 to 758.
The number of applications for copyright registration of a work continues to grow. The number of applications for registration of copyright in a work increased by 24.6% compared to the same period of the previous year. The number of filed contracts relating to the author’s right in a work slightly decreased by 6.5% compared to the same period last year.
