New achievements and challenges in copyright: Liubov Maidanyk joins ICI 2025
The impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on copyright and related rights, digital enforcement, efficient rights management, and new approaches to registration and licensing were discussed at the International Copyright Institute (ICI 2025) held in Washington, D.C. (USA).
Liubov Maidanyk, Deputy Director of the Ukrainian National Office for Intellectual Property and Innovations (UANIPIO/IP Office), took part in the event organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in cooperation with the United States Copyright Office (USCO).

ICI 2025 focused on new developments and challenges in the sphere of copyright and related rights, strategic issues at the national and international levels, with a particular emphasis on developing countries and countries with transition economies.
The event served as a platform for learning about US practices and sharing experiences with a view to improving the national copyright system, infrastructure, and capabilities to address new challenges in this area.
The ICI 2025 program covered a wide range of issues related to copyright and related rights, including:
Role of copyright and related rights in the development of the creative economy;
Copyright system in the United States: registration policy and practice;
Models of national and multi-territorial licensing;
Development of strategic partnerships;
Current issues related to the development of artificial intelligence;
Digital law enforcement;
Regulation of the use of digital replicas (copies);
Best practices of collective rights management organizations, effective rights management.
During her visit to the US, Liubov Maidanyk also visited USCO, where she presented the activities of UANIPIO and talked about her experience of working with Ukrainian creative industries in the area of copyright and related rights on a demand-based approach.
The meeting participants also discussed issues related to:
Prospects for the development of voluntary copyright registration as a strategic direction for many countries in the coming years;
Challenges associated with the use of artificial intelligence and the importance of licensing as an effective tool for regulating legal relations in this area;
Problems of protecting the rights to a person’s digitized voice and image (digital replica) and the reasons for the development of the Anti-Fake Act in the US in the context of combating deepfakes.
