    Integration of Ukrainian innovations into the global IP space: a meeting between representatives of UANIPIO, USPTO and the US Embassy in Ukraine

     

    How can Ukraine integrate more effectively into the global market via intellectual property tools? How can American institutions contribute to this? And what will be the main areas of cooperation between the Ukrainian National Office for Intellectual Property and Innovations (UANIPIO/IP Office) and the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in 2025?

     

    These and other issues were discussed by the representatives of UANIPIO, the US Embassy in Ukraine and the USPTO on December 18, 2024 during an online meeting.

     

    The American side was represented at the event:

     

    •  Dorian Mazurkevich, Intellectual Property Attaché at the US Embassy in Ukraine, USPTO representative;

     

    • Jeffrey Joseph and Valentyna Syza, representatives of the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine;

     

    • Paolo Trevisan and Aurelia Schultz, representatives of the USPTO.

    UANIPIO was represented at the meeting by:

     

    • Bogdan Paduchak, First Deputy Director;

     

    • Mykola Pototskyi, Advisor to the Director;

     

    • Andrii Zozuliuk, Head of the International Cooperation Department;

     

    • Maryna Hepenko, leading IP professional, International Cooperation Department.

    Topics of discussion

     

    During the meeting, the parties focused on important aspects, in particular:

     

    • an overview of initiatives to support applicants and priority areas of innovation activity;

     

    • the results of cooperation between the institutions in 2024;

     

    • initiatives for patent worksharing program;

     

    • plans for joint projects for 2025.

     

    The participants of the meeting shared their views and laid the foundation for 2025 for the effective patent worksharing between UANIPIO and the USPTO within the framework of the Paris Convention and the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT).

     

    Results and next steps

     

    The results of this meeting will be an important step towards strengthening the innovation potential and protection of innovations in Ukraine and the United States, optimizing the processing time of patent applications, and supporting projects in priority areas of innovation. Bogdan Paduchak emphasized this, noting:

     

    “Cooperation with the USPTO confirms our commitment to provide quality support to applicants, improve patenting procedures and integrate Ukrainian innovations into the global intellectual property space, ensuring proper IP rights protection of foreign applicants in the national jurisdiction.”
