As part of the joint project between the Ukrainian National Office for Intellectual Property and Innovations (UANIPIO) and Royal Holloway, University of London, a series of Open Innovation Workshops took place in Kyiv and Lviv. The initiative aims to promote open innovation culture and create sustainable connections between academia, business, government, and civil society.
The Open Innovations workshops, held in Kyiv and Lviv, brought together leading Ukrainian innovators, policy-makers, entrepreneurs, researchers and NGOs to explore practical mechanisms for rebuilding the economy through open innovation and intellectual property (information in Ukrainian is available for the Kyiv workshop here, and for the Lviv workshop here).
Participants worked on real-world cases, explored best practices from the EU innovation ecosystem, and exchanged ideas on creating collaborative projects, building trust between sectors, and using intellectual property strategically to scale innovation.
Special attention was paid to aligning Ukrainian innovation policy with European approaches and promoting local initiatives that can contribute to national resilience.
As part of the project UANIPIO and Royal Holloway experts developed a practical Open Innovation Toolkit, designed to help institutions, universities, and entrepreneurs implement open innovation principles in their daily activities.
The toolkit includes ready-to-use templates, stakeholder-mapping tools, and best practices for managing collaborative projects – serving as a step-by-step guide for those building Ukraine’s post-war innovation capacity.
Two thematic podcasts were recorded within the project, available in Ukrainian.
The first episode features Olena Orliuk, Director of UANIPIO, who discussed the role of intellectual property as a resource for innovation-driven growth and the importance of building institutional infrastructure for open innovation. The conversation focuses on applying the Quadruple Helix model – collaboration between science, business, government, and society – as a foundation for Ukraine’s sustainable recovery. (Listen in Ukrainian).
The second episode features Oleksandra Antoniuk, Deputy Director of the Kyiv Academic University and Chair of the National Council’s for Science and Technologies Scientific Committee, who shared insights on the creation of Academ City, the importance of research funding, and the relevance of the German Adlershof Science and Technology Park experience for Ukraine (Listen in Ukrainian).
Both conversations were moderated by Olha Miroshnychenko, Visiting Researcher at the British Academy and Royal Holloway, University of London and emphasized on how Ukraine’s innovation ecosystem may integrate into the global network of open collaboration.
This project plays a crucial role in strengthening Ukraine’s innovation ecosystem. By promoting the principles of open innovation, it brings together government, business, academia, and civil society – creating a foundation for collaboration, knowledge exchange, and sustainable economic growth.
Such initiatives are essential for building bridges between research and real-world application, transforming intellectual property into a driver of technological progress and recovery.
For UANIPIO, this collaboration with Royal Holloway, University of London is a valuable opportunity to enhance institutional capacity, expand international partnerships, and position Ukraine as an active participant in the global innovation community.
Open innovation is not just a concept – it is a path toward rebuilding the country through ideas, creativity, and shared expertise.
