On August 27-28, 2025, the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Infringement Monitoring Center of the Ukrainian National Office for Intellectual Property and Innovations (UANIPIO / IP Office) conducted a training course “Current issues of the fundamentals of legal protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights” for specialists of the State Customs Service of Ukraine.
The program was designed to provide customs officials with basic knowledge and practical skills for the effective detection and prevention of goods crossing the customs border of Ukraine in infringement of legally protected intellectual property rights, as well as for establishing cooperation with rights holders and state authorities.
“The development of an effective infrastructure for preventing and combating piracy and counterfeiting remains among the priorities of UANIPIO. Positive results in combating infringements can only be achieved through close cooperation between customs authorities and other state institutions, in particular with the IP Office. Such coordination makes it possible to combine efforts in identifying violations, responding promptly, and effectively applying existing legal mechanisms for the protection of intellectual property”, noted Vladyslav Bilotskyi, Deputy Director of UANIPIO, in his opening remarks.
In turn, Vladyslav Suvorov, Deputy Head of the State Customs Service of Ukraine, emphasized:
“The protection of intellectual property rights is a cornerstone in building a healthy national economy, underpinning an attractive investment environment, a safe consumer market, and a strong tax culture. It is a sensitive benchmark by which foreign investors assess a country. Customs authorities play one of the key roles in this process, as they are the ones who prevent counterfeit and pirated products from entering our territory. We clearly understand that counterfeiting and piracy are not only economic losses for the state, but also a real threat to the health of citizens, especially in cases involving falsified medicines, food products, or children’s toys”.
The training course consisted of two sessions and was held online via the Zoom platform. The speakers were specialists from UANIPIO:
The training was moderated by Kateryna Kondratenko, Intellectual Property Specialist of the IPR`s Infringement Monitoring Center.
Within the framework of the course, the following topics were covered:
Specialists of IP Office delivered presentations to officials of the State Customs Service, highlighting key aspects of the fundamentals of legal protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights
The training included not only theoretical lectures but also a practical component. Speakers conducted interactive workshops enabling participants to practice the acquired knowledge in real-life situations, analyze case studies, and work through procedures when detecting infringements of intellectual property rights. This format successfully allowed participants to combine theory with practice and ensured maximum benefit from the training.
Upon completion of the training course, participants received certificates confirming their participation and the acquisition of new knowledge and skills in the field of intellectual property.
