    Copyright, AI, and IP rights protection: presentation of a new EUIPO initiative and the results of the Ukrainian IPR Monitoring Center activities

    The IV National Forum on Intellectual Property and Innovation “Intellectual Property: Law, Economy, Technology” (IP LET Forum 2025), featured presentations outlining current challenges and trends in copyright and intellectual property rights protection.

    EUIPO Copyright Knowledge Centre: a driving force for creativity and innovation

    Harrie Temmink, Head of IP in the Digital World Service at EUIPO and representative of the European Observatory on Infringements of Intellectual Property Rights, spoke about:

    • the creation of the EUIPO Copyright Knowledge Centre;
    • issues related to generative AI and copyright.

    Harrie Temmink’s speech during the online broadcast

    The EUIPO Copyright Knowledge Centre is a platform for those who create or use creative works. EUIPO has long been working in the field of copyright, raising awareness and developing tools. With the launch of the Copyright Knowledge Centre during the Conference on Copyright on November 20, 2025, EUIPO is taking this work to a new level, with a mission to inform, engage, and explore modern approaches so that copyright remains a driving force for creativity and innovation in Europe.

    According to Harrie Temmink, the establishment of the EUIPO Copyright Knowledge Centre is driven by current trends: digitalization and development of new technologies. Digital innovation poses new challenges for copyright, as it is now easier than ever to create, reuse, or automatically generate content and distribute it globally. This encourages discussion of challenges and finding solutions that are cross-border by its nature.

    The speaker emphasized that despite the harmonization of copyright rules in the EU, copyright legislative acts vary between member states. In this context, the recently launched Europe Interactive Map of Copyright is a tool that helps users navigate and compare national copyright systems, providing key information on legislation, institutions, copyright registries, rights management, legal offers for content and more.

    Harrie Temmink also spoke in detail about a study published in May 2025 on the Development of Generative Artificial Intelligence from a Copyright Perspective.

    IPR Monitoring Center: combating against IP infringements

    Natalia Denis, Deputy Head of the Center, spoke about the results of a two-year activity by the UANIPIO Intellectual Property Rights Infringement Monitoring Center (IPR Monitoring Center) and its plans for 2026:

    “Today, the issue of intellectual property rights enforcement remains particularly important. Intellectual property is not only about rights holders and authors. It is about trust in the system, fair competition, and business development. After all, every counterfeit or infringement is not just an illegal act, but a loss for the State, the economy, and everyone who creates something. We are creating a safe and supportive environment for creators. And this is the key mission of the Intellectual Property Rights Infringement Monitoring Center. The Center is a platform for communication, a place where state bodies, businesses, and the community can discuss new challenges and find common solutions.”

    Natalia Denis

    The Deputy Head of the IPR Monitoring Center presented the main results of the center’s activity over the past year in relation to:

    • international cooperation;

    • cooperation with state bodies;

    • analysis of the state of intellectual property rights enforcement;

    • research on current and problematic issues in the field of music (national campaign ANTI-PIRACY: MUSIC; materials for musicians: information cards, manuals, webinar;

    • materials for business: recommendations for the legal use of music; participation in the study “Music Has Power”);

    • research on the activities of marketplaces in the context of IP rights compliance (joint campaign with OLX: Trust the Original; webinar “How to buy online without counterfeits”; analytical research on infringements on marketplaces).

    In addition, the speaker outlined the key areas of activity for the IPR Monitoring Center for 2026. These include:

    • strengthening cooperation and capacity building among stakeholders in the field of e-commerce to combat intellectual property rights infringements;

    • continuing to strengthen institutional capacity and consolidate state bodies in the IP protection system;

    • conducting educational activities;

    • conducting analytical work and research on trends and challenges in the field of intellectual property rights infringements.
