IP LET Forum 2025: Technologies of the future and IP (session summary, video)

How can the usage of artificial intelligence help in the field of intellectual property? What experience should be borrowed and how can we develop our own? These issues were discussed during the session “Technologies of the Future and IP” at the IP LET Forum 2025, which took place on November 27, 2025, in Kyiv.

In today’s world, no field, especially intellectual property, is possible without innovations, emphasized Mykola Pototskyi, Deputy Director of the IP Office, who moderated the discussion:

“The technologies of the future and IP are interdependent phenomena, because intellectual property must protect and commercialize technical innovations. At the same time, it is technology that allows us to improve the IP system itself, providing new opportunities for inventors, science, and business in the context of acquiring, managing, and protecting intellectual property.”

    Mykola Pototskyi

Angel Aledo Lopez, Chief Operating Officer & Chief Technology Officer, EPO, spoke about the technological developments of the European Patent Office (EPO) and the initiatives of the TIP platform, as well as the tools already in use to optimize the IP sphere.

“AI has helped us and continues to provide tools that assist in processing various applications and in the work of our Office. We have implemented some tools for search, translation, data processing, analysis, and communication. We are now working on taking on more complex areas of work. At the same time, we remain committed to a human-centered approach, because people + AI will mean better results,” said Angel Aledo Lopez.

Rahul Bhartiya, AI Coordinator at the EU Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), Digital Innovation Department, spoke about the EUIPO’s initiatives and projects in the field of technology and the services already provided by artificial intelligence.

“We believe it is very important to have a framework and system for using AI. We have also developed a structured approach to integrate artificial intelligence systems and our workflow, and to teach people how to use them effectively. We analyze situations and relevant models that are suitable for a specific case,” the speaker pointed out.

Kateryna Nalyvaiko, Head of the IP Directorate at the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, outlined the specifics of protecting intellectual property rights for objects created by military personnel:

“In our country, all innovations are now born on the battlefield, and our main task is to ensure that they develop, scale up, and strengthen our army. This is our motto: “From idea to soldier.” We see intellectual property not only as a legal tool, but also as something that will motivate military personnel, strengthen defense capabilities, and become an indicator of the effectiveness of the country’s defense.

There are currently a large number of engineers in the defense forces. Their experience and expertise allow them to create incredible solutions that need to be scaled up.”

    Kateryna Nalyvaiko

Vladyslav Bilotskyi, Deputy Director of UANIPIO, outlined the nuances of intellectual property protection for defense technologies:

“War never changes – technologies change. And where new technological solutions appear, there is a need for their reliable protection. Each development is of strategic importance to the State, so its disclosure can create risks both for Ukraine’s defense capabilities and for the developers themselves. That is why intellectual property protection in the defense sector is extremely important today. And we already have the tools to do this effectively.

    Vladyslav Bilotskyi

UANIPIO provides a comprehensive approach to the protection of intellectual property: we cooperate with both the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and inventors. Our system allows us to properly conceal sensitive information and guarantees the security of developments,” added the Deputy Director of UANIPIO.

Dmytro Voitekh, AI expert, announced the creation of a national AI language model:

“We are working to create a comprehensive artificial intelligence ecosystem that will comply with European standards and legislation. We very much hope that this will become a reality as early as next year.”

    Dmytro Voitekh

Yuliia Prokhoda, Patent Attorney, Lawyer, National Expert on EU projects, Legal Advisor to the UN FAO in Ukraine, and Founder of NAPA, spoke about the technologies of the future in the real sector of the economy, in particular AI and IP in agriculture:

“Currently the agenda is that the agricultural sector needs smart irrigation systems, but can artificial intelligence calculate everything? Not always. Because it is a tool that must be controlled by humans. When we talk about technologies of the future, we should not think that artificial intelligence will solve all problems. We need to think about where we can still solve these problems with our existing efforts. We have unique experience, and in some cases, our services and developments are much better than those abroad.”

    Yuliia Prokhoda

Mykola Hora, Head of the Expert Group on Agricultural Policy, Consumer Protection and Technical Regulation at the Government Office for Coordination of European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, outlined the innovations that Ukraine can offer to the agricultural sector.

    Mykola Hora

“The agricultural sector needs planning, which requires data. The EU is creating bodies that collect data from each country (yield, plant protection products, etc.). This data is then compiled to forecast our food security for years to come. By introducing artificial intelligence into these data processing processes, this could become a ready-made business model for companies and countries. Ukraine is first in the agricultural sector, but it must be first in technology,” concluded Mykola Hora.
